Ziyi Wang’s solo performances are rooted in a deep engagement with the expressive possibilities of the piano.With a foundation in the classical piano tradition, she is drawn to repertoire that explores color, texture, and musical imagination, seeking to reveal the unique character and expressive world of each work.

Her artistic interests span a wide range of repertoire, from the Baroque and Romantic traditions to twentieth-century and contemporary music. She is particularly interested in French piano repertoire and contemporary Chinese piano music, exploring the ways composers transform sound into imagery and narrative.

About the Project

The Art of Aural Imagery is a completed artistic project centered on the complete piano preludes of Claude Debussy and contemporary Chinese composer Ningwu Du.

Although separated by more than a century and rooted in different musical traditions, both composers share a remarkable ability to evoke vivid imagery through sound. By bringing these two complete collections into dialogue, the project explores how color, texture, harmony, and musical gesture create expressive landscapes that extend beyond the notes themselves.

Developed through performance, recording, and scholarly research, the project reflects my interest in connecting artistic interpretation with cultural understanding while introducing audiences to both the poetic world of Debussy and the rich imagination of Ningwu Du’s contemporary piano music.

Debussy

Debussy allows sound itself to suggest atmosphere, color, and imagination.His prelude titles appear only at the end of each piece, inviting listeners to discover their own imagery before revealing the poetic inspiration.

Inspired by Chinese poetry, mythology, and landscape, Ningwu Du provides a title and poem for each prelude, offering a more explicit path into the imaginative world of the music.
